7 great winter days out in Mount Gambier

If you're looking for some entertainment in Mount Gambier over the winter months, here are 7 suggestions that should keep you busy. From exploring the city's history to visiting our incredible caves, there's something for everyone.

Herbert Vineyard

Many years ago, Australians discovered that the Limestone Coast was perfect for growing grapes. There are now many vineyards in the region, and one of the best is the Herbert Vineyard.

Herbert’s is open by appointment or for afternoon trade. Visitors love this destination’s fine wines, rich olive oils, friendly service, and hedge maze. Be sure to check out their Facebook page for any upcoming events or specials.

Umpherston Sinkhole

The Umpherston Sinkhole is an unmissable Mount Gambier attraction, especially in the winter months when the waterfalls are flowing.

Along with viewing the stunning limestone caves, there are beautiful gardens to enjoy and the opportunity to feed the local possums. BBQ facilities mean you can pack a delicious picnic lunch and have the perfect afternoon out with the family.

The Railway Walking Trail

The Mount Gambier Rail Trail is the perfect way to see the city and its surroundings while enjoying some exercise.

The 8km trail runs right through the middle of town, following the path of the old railway line. A flat and easy walk, the track is also accessible for push bikes and prams. Road crossings are safe and secure, and, running through town as it does, there is no lack of amenities. Step out for a walk or a jog on a clear winter’s day.

Dine out on Commercial Street

Mount Gambier has some wonderful dining venues around its Commercial Street hub. Here are a few of our favourites:

Royal Copenhagen Ice Creamery: Ice cream is good at any time of year, and if it includes a free, self-service toppings bar, even better. If you feel too cold after choosing one of the dozens of flavours at the Royal Copenhagen Ice Creamery, you can always order a delicious coffee or hot chocolate.

Presto Eatery: Right in the heart of Mount Gambier, Presto Eatery is your destination for cafe culture. Healthy food, unique coffees and creative cocktails make Presto a must-visit.

Metro Bakery: Everyone in Mount Gambier knows where to go for the best cakes and breakfast in town – Metro Bakery, where everything is made in-house and only the best. There’s also an extensive gluten-free selection.

Valley Lake

Mount Gambier’s Valley Lake is another unmissable attraction. It is a great place to take the family, with playground and picnic facilities as well as a Conservation park with koalas and kangaroos.

There is also Thyme at the Lakes for a more romantic day out and a unique dining experience. With incredible views and a menu to match, Thyme at the Lakes is just right for a romantic meal for two or a special event.

Engelbrecht Cave Café and tour

Once you have discovered the Umpherston Sinkhole, then the Engelbrecht Cave café and tour should be your next stop.

When you take this Mount Gambier cave tour, expect some unique cave formations and surprising stories. Best of all, after the tour, you can enjoy some alfresco dining with coffee and cakes to sate your appetite.

For the more intrepid, you can organise a cave diving trip and explore deep under the earth.

Echo Farm

Visit Echo Farm and learn what life was like for Australia’s pioneering farmers.

A self-guided tour of this old-style farm lets you experience farm life and interact with and feed the animals. Enjoy a high tea, stroll around the grounds and look through the old farmhouse, still as it was in the 1940s—another perfect day out with the family for fun and education.
