With the brand new aquatic centre opening in Mount Gambier next month, there’s never been a better time to enjoy all the benefits that swimming offers to people of all ages.
The benefits of swimming for older adults
Swimming is one of the most beneficial activities that you can undertake, whatever your age. This is because swimming is a low-impact form of exercise and can help to increase your stamina.
In fact, studies have shown that swimming can even slow down the ageing process because it really works on your cardiovascular health. It has been shown to reduce blood pressure, improve oxygen intake and increase muscle mass.
That’s why many older people who suffer from joint pain or who have mobility issues are flocking to take part in aquatic exercises. These exercises help to increase flexibility and can even reduce joint inflammation.
Lastly, swimming is a great way to socialise with friends and feel good.
The revamped Mount Gambier swimming pool set to open in December
The new aquatic facilities at the Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre are set to open in December this year (2022). The facilities include a revamped 50-metre outdoor pool, a new 25-metre indoor pool, a splash pad, a program pool, and a learn-to-swim pool.
This means that you can enjoy a swim or other forms of aquatic exercise such as aqua aerobics at any time of the year.
You can also consider taking out an affordable aquatic membership which gives you unlimited access to their aquatic facilities and unlimited aqua aerobics classes. You never know. Once you immerse yourself in some aquatic activities, you might find that you want to enjoy some time in the pool every day.
Where to find swimming lessons for adults in Mount Gambier
While their learn-to-swim classes are mainly designed for children, Squashbrook Fitness and Leisure Centre do have a mineral-rich heated indoor pool and spa in their adult facility, where you can do aquatic exercise classes.
Once the new Wulunda Aquatic centre opens in December, they are partnering with the GOswim Program and will be offering swimming lessons for all ages from January 2023. By visiting their website, you can express your interest and be placed on the priority list as soon as classes become available.
Their adult swimming lesson program states that it’s never too late to learn to swim. The program focuses on water safety and stroke development. The classes will be limited to 6 students each with one teacher per class and will run for 30 minutes. And, they’re very affordable!
