With the beautiful countryside in and around our town, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of outdoor activities you can pursue to improve your fitness.
Take a stroll
Mount Gambier and the Limestone Coast have more unique places to walk and hike than can be listed. Whether you head out of town to hike the Blue Lake Circuit or the Crater Lakes Trail, stay in town and walk the Railway Trail or head to a local park for a run, you can’t go wrong.
Hit the tracks
Almost anywhere that you can walk or hike, you can also run. For extra motivation, why not join the Mount Gambier Parkrun? It’s a free five-kilometre run at 8 am every Saturday. All skill levels are welcome; just show up to Blue Lake Reserve.
Get on your bike
Time to tee up
Nothing beats golf for some gentle exercise with an added challenge. Why not find a friend and play a round? The Mount Gambier Golf Club consistently rates in the top 100 courses in Australia.
Catch a healthy dinner
Fishing is not only standing around and waiting. Try angling or deep sea fishing off the Limestone Coast, and you will get a top-notch upper body workout. All going well, you will also be able to enjoy a delicious dinner of fresh fish.
Join a team
A quick search on mycommunitydirectory.com will turn up dozens of team sport options in Mount Gambier, including cricket, football, netball, basketball, and many more.
If you want to stay active at a slightly slower pace, there is also the Mount Gambier Bowls Club. Don’t underestimate the health advantages of an afternoon’s bowling.
Gyms and fitness
If working out outside is not your thing, Mount Gambier also has options for gyms and fitness.
F45 training will help you get in shape with some high-intensity interval training (HIIT). HIIT is perfect if you are time poor and want a serious workout.
Fitness centre Reflexion is perfect for a workout class. Active classes include Fitness and Wellbeing, Mature Movers, and Zumba Gold. Reflexion also offers online classes. While fantastic swimming is to be found at incredible locations like Little Blue Lake, the one thing that all Mount Gambier residents know is still missing in town is an indoor aquatic centre.
The good news is The Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre at Olympic Park on Margaret Street is taking shape. There may have been delays due to COVID-19, but work is back on, and the centre is busy with construction and workers. The latest updates say that the cafe is coming together, and acoustic treatments are almost done. There’s no concrete timeline for the doors to open yet, but before too long, Mount Gambians will be able to add swimming laps at the Aquatic Centre to the list of fantastic ways to get fit on the Limestone Coast.
