Why Millennials are drawn to Mount Gambier

Why Millennials are drawn to Mount Gambier

Here’s some news you may have been hearing about – migration from the capital cities to Australia’s regional towns hit a five-year high in June, particularly for those aged between 24 and 40. If you’d like to read the report, you’ll find it on the ABC website.

This growth is obviously great news for the regions, and something we’re increasingly seeing here in Mount Gambier. We’ve always championed this part of the Limestone Coast as a place that offers something for everyone, and now many more people are catching on!

For the real estate market, this opens a multitude of opportunities, for buyers to secure a great new home and for sellers to achieve solid asking prices. And here’s why.

Why Mount Gambier is attractive to buyers

There are plenty of reasons why Mount Gambier is seen as an ideal place to set up home. The mix of heritage buildings and new developments provides a lovely balance of character and modernity, and there are heaps of great things, for all ages, to enjoy on the weekend.

The community is welcoming and friendly, with many groups and initiatives to get involved with, and while it’s not a huge city, it’s not too small either, with a generous, ‘big country town’ feel. Everything you need is available in the abundance of retailers and amenities in Mount Gambier. And thanks to a large hospital, there are jobs for those in healthcare, and it also means you don’t have to travel out-of-town for treatment.

All of this adds up to a great deal of appeal for young couples and those starting a family, especially since a home here offers considerably more space than what you get in a metropolitan centre (and for a significantly lower price). And of course the variety of schooling and education on offer is a big tick in the right box. Plus, the refurbished and expanded indoor aquatic centre and community hub will also be opening soon, sure to be a favourite hang out spot for the whole family.

The Regional Australia Institute (RAI) found that affordable housing was one of the key reasons Millennials (aged 24 to 40) were deciding to up sticks and that Mount Gambier was perfectly positioned between Adelaide and Melbourne to capture movement from these cities.

How to appeal to buyers

If you think it’s now the right time for you to put your property on the market, the next step is how to attract buyers, and this means understanding what they are looking for. While most won’t be expecting a fully renovated home, it is important that the interior (especially the kitchen and bathroom/s) are decluttered and clean. The approach we take to marketing and selling a home varies as every property is unique, so it’s worth talking to us before making any big changes prior to selling – you don’t want to overcapitalise.
